Rochelle Rollins headlines UAB Community Week

Celebrate UAB’s diversity and learn about other cultures and experiences at UAB Community Week.

The UAB community is invited to participate in celebrating culture, heritage and diversity at UAB Community Week, Jan. 25-29.

Rochelle RollinsRochelle RollinsThis year, Acting Deputy Director of the Office on Trafficking in Persons in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Rochelle Rollins will headline a week of events with her presentation “Healthcare professionals can end human trafficking” on Friday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. in UAB’s Spain Auditorium.

January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Rollins’ presentation is sponsored by the UAB School of Dentistry.

UAB Community Week provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to learn about cultural diversity through various programs such as lectures, discussions, films, volunteer projects and cultural events.

“Community Week is a wonderful time for students of different cultures, backgrounds and experiences to come together in an effort to learn more about each other and about themselves,” said Vice President for Student Affairs John R. Jones III, Ph.D. “UAB continues to show its commitment to cultivating an inclusive environment where students, faculty and staff have the ability to celebrate their differences and similarities.”

Other Community Week events for 2016 include a Disability Support Services wheelchair flag football game, with Lakeshore Foundation’s team against UAB students and employees, at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, in the Campus Rec Center.

The annual UAB International Bazaar is set for 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, in the Hill Student Center Ballroom. In partnership with a variety of individuals and group participants, UAB’s Multicultural Council will showcase the cultural diversity inherent in our university and the Greater Birmingham community. There will be informational displays, performances and activities with a focus on international representation.
