UAB Cancer Center’s Fiesta Ball helps fund young cancer researchers

UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Fiesta Ball on May 5 will support the work of young cancer research scientists and patient and family services.

fiesta ball 2017 3The Young Supporters Board  of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center  presents Fiesta Ball 2017, an evening with live music, Mexican food and drinks, as well as a silent auction, on Cinco de Mayo, Friday, May 5, 7-11 p.m. at Iron City, 513 22nd St. South.

The annual fun-filled event will benefit young cancer researchers at UAB by jump-starting their research, with the goal of leveraging their research findings to compete for additional federal grants. The silent auction portion of the evening will benefit UAB cancer patient and family services.

“It is more important than ever to support young cancer researchers,” said Edward Partridge, M.D., director of the UAB Cancer Center. “With the economic climate the way it is, with severe cuts to federal funding, many young researchers could possibly turn away from their cancer research altogether. And these bright minds may hold the key to the next discovery.”

The Young Supporters Board of the UAB Cancer Center was established in 2006 to introduce the next generation of Alabamians to the importance of cancer research and awareness. The board is composed of local professionals, ages 22 to 40, who have been touched by cancer in some way.

“Without community support, we couldn’t provide the resources that are needed,” said Charlie Adams, president of the UAB Cancer Center’s Young Supporters Board. “We host many projects and fundraisers throughout the year including the annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Ball to go toward young investigator grants.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $35 at uab.edu/fiestaball or $40 at the door. Self-parking is available on the street near Iron City.

The title sponsor for this year’s event is Alabama Power. Grand sponsors are ARD Contracting and AutoTec. Other event sponsors include Capstone Real Estate Investments, Jemison Investment Co., HealthSouth, Starnes Davis Florie, and Warren Averett CPAs and Advisors, among many other local businesses.
