A doctoral student has won two awards that will help him continue his work in the UAB Youth Safety Lab.

Jiabin Shen, M.Ed., a doctoral student in the UAB Department of Psychology, won two awards that will further his work in understanding and preventing children’s injuries. Shen was granted the SOPHE/CDC Student Fellowship in Injury Prevention and the Lizette Peterson-Homer Memorial Injury Prevention Research Grant Award.

“This is my first year in graduate school at UAB and my first time to be in the United States, so I feel really excited to be awarded these two grants,” said Shen, who received his master’s from East China Normal University in Shanghai. “These honors offer me a great start to my research at UAB on cross-cultural unintentional injury prevention for children.”

Thousands of children in rural China suffer serious dog-bite injuries every year. Shen will examine the attitudes, beliefs and practices of Chinese farmers and their children around dogs. His goal is to develop an intervention program to train families and reduce the number of children that are injured.

Shen works in the UAB Youth Safety Laboratory under the mentorship of David Schwebel, Ph.D., associate dean for Research in the Sciences in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences.
