  • July 08, 2013

This is the only tie for first place in the history of the competition.

Optometry_bowl_sDavid Zimmerman, a student in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Optometry, tied for first place in the 22nd annual Varilux® Optometry Student Bowl™ at the American Optometric Association’s annual meeting in San Diego. This is the only tie for first place in the history of the competition.

A total of 22 students from schools and colleges of optometry in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico squared off in this contest of optometry-related questions, while hundreds of their classmates and faculty members cheer them on.

Zimmerman’s win means a $1,000 prize is headed to UAB, along with six months of hosting the competition’s crystal trophy. Last year, UAB placed second in the competition. In 2010, UAB placed first.
