Endowed awards and scholarships established

Awards and scholarships were established in the schools of Medicine, Dentistry and Public Health and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved the establishment of several endowed awards and scholarships at the University of Alabama at Birmingham during its meeting on Sept. 13, 2013.

  • The Helen and Murphy Evans Endowed Medical Scholarship was established in the School of Medicine through gifts from the estate of Helen and Murphy Evans, Hughes Evans, M.D., Ph.D., and Eric Sorscher, M.D. The scholarship will support the training and education of future medical professionals. Hughes Evans is chair of the Department of Medical Education and Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education; Sorscher, her husband, is a professor in the Division of Hematology and Oncology. The award is named in honor of the Evans’ parents.
  • The Fifth District Dental Society Endowed Scholarship was established in the School of Dentistry through gifts from the Fifth District Dental Society. The endowment will provide financial assistance to deserving dental students from the Fifth District of the Alabama Dental Association.
  • The Moses Sinkala Memorial Zambia Endowed Award was established in the School of Public Health in memory of Moses Sinkala, Ph.D., who was one of the first AIDS International Training and Research Program participants from Zambia. The award will support students enrolled at the University of Zambia.
  • The Dr. James R. Ward Jr. Memorial Endowed Award in Mathematics was established in the Department of Mathematics through gifts from Enemencia M. Ward, friends and family. Ward joined the UAB faculty in 1989 and was named professor emeritus in 2010.
