UAB presents 38th Juried Student Exhibition with juror George Ferrandi

An exhibition featuring the best works from studio art students will be on show March 19-April 18 in the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts.

mary margaret morganBy: Mary Margaret MorganArtist George Ferrandi is the juror for this year’s University of Alabama at Birmingham Juried Student Exhibition, presented by the Department of Art and Art History.

This year marks the . The exhibition will be on show March 19 through April 18 in the UAB Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, 1221 10th Ave. South. An opening reception will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, March 21. The exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public.

Each year, the UAB DAAH invites all students enrolled in studio art courses at any level in the previous year to submit up to five works to be considered for the exhibition.

“The student annual is a chance for the Department of Art and Art History to highlight the talent of our students and the quality of the works produced in the past year at UAB,” said Associate Professor of Art Derek Cracco, MFA. “This exhibition also allows our students the opportunity to have their work critically evaluated by practicing artists of note.”

jonathan riordanBy: Jonathan RiordanThis year, 280 individual works of art were submitted for consideration. The works represent every major studio art discipline offered at UAB, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, printmaking and time-based media. The exhibition will feature works selected as the best by Ferrandi, who will be in residence at UAB as a visiting guest artist from March 10-20.

Ferrandi’s work has been performed and exhibited around the country. She has received grants from the Franklin Furnace Fundwinners for Performance Art, the Mid Atlantic Arts Council and the RISD Part-time Faculty Association. Her work has been published in The New York Times, Brooklyn Rail and The Huffington Post. Ferrandi teaches sculpture and performance art at the Rhode Island School of Design and at Virginia Commonwealth University.

laura smithBy: Laura SmithDuring Ferrandi’s UAB residency, she will work with students and develop a live performance and exhibition, “The Prosthetics of Joy,” commissioned by the DAAH. “Prosthetics of Joy” is a multimedia project open to participation. The performance, a one-act play in which the players, the set and the costumes are indivisible, will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at the AEIVA. Receptions for the Juried Student and “The Prosthetics of Joy” exhibitions will be held together March 21.

The “Prosthetics of Joy” exhibition will be on show March 19 through April 18, at the AEIVA. The AEIVA is open to the public 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 12-6 p.m. Saturday.
