news vJosh Carpenter 2016The UAB Spring EXPO celebrates excellence in research, creative activity and scholarship by showcasing the academic endeavors of undergraduate students. UAB alumnus Josh Carpenter will deliver the keynote address, “Becoming Confident in Curiosity: Live the Questions,” on Friday, April 15, at 11 a.m. in the UAB Hill Student Center Alumni Theatre.

"We can expect Josh Carpenter to inspire this year's students participating in this year's Undergraduate Research Expo," said Collat School of Business Honors Program director Stephen A. Yoder. "In his senior year at UAB, Josh was a student presenter on a leadership research project at the 2010 Expo, and his career since then shows that grit and curiosity do indeed reap rewards.”

Carpenter is the co-founder and president of Bama Covered, a nonprofit public health education initiative. Due to its innovative approach to grassroots health education and student engagement, Bama Covered has been recognized nationally for training and mobilizing nearly 700 college students to engage in 100,000 public health conversations in the communities that surrounded their campuses.

Previously, Carpenter served as a White House intern and was a Teach for America corps member in Alabama’s inaugural corps. He taught English and theater, and coached football and baseball in his home state of Alabama, where in 2012, he was named the state’s “Golden Apple Teacher of the Year.” A Rhodes Scholar, Carpenter earned his B.S. degree in accounting from UAB and his M.Sc. in comparative social policy and is currently studying for a D.Phil. in politics at Oxford University, where he explores the intersections of the political engagement of low-income citizens and health policy.

UAB’s Spring EXPO provides a platform for students to practice and strengthen presentation skills, share work, engage with like-minded peers, and exchange research experiences and ideas, as well as receive feedback from both peers and faculty.

This year UAB EXPO has expanded to two days, April 14-15. In an effort to go green, UAB EXPO has created an app to plan schedules and browse abstracts, maps and general info. The app is compatible with iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches and Android devices. Windows Phone 7 and Blackberry users can access the same information via a mobile site.
