Hundreds of students will present academic pursuits in cutting-edge research topics.

summer expo 2017The Summer Expo showcases the research and service learning work being produced by UAB undergraduates and other students in UAB summer research programs, summer REU programs, and other summer opportunities. The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Office of Undergraduate Research will host nearly 200 student presentations during its Summer Expo on Thursday, July 20.

The EXPO celebrates excellence in research, creative activity and scholarship by showcasing the academic endeavors of undergraduate students covering more than three-quarters of the majors offered at UAB. Undergraduates will have the opportunity to present what they have learned through their research experiences to an audience. This event also provides a forum for students, faculty and the community to discuss cutting-edge research topics and to examine the connection between research and education.

“The expo is important because it showcases all the different research experiences across campus,” said Gareth Jones, assistant director of the Office of Service Learning and Undergraduate Research. “From the STEM fields to the creative arts, the expo provides a platform for students to showcase their incredible research.”

This year’s EXPO will feature a keynote address by Collat School of Business Assistant Professor Stephen Yoder, Ph.D. He will speak about the best ways for students to leverage their undergraduate research experiences.

“Undergraduate research is a major focus at UAB because it is one of the most important skills a student can develop as an undergraduate,” Jones said. “Allowing students to prepare for the postgraduate world with hands-on and innovative experiences allows them to develop mentor relationships with faculty and staff that can last a lifetime.”

Registration, poster setup and student presentations will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 20, in the Hill Student Center. The keynote address will be held at 11:30 a.m. followed by the awards ceremony. For more information, visit the Summer EXPO website.
