BIRMINGHAM, AL — The UAB Health System's "Dear Doctors" column has received national recognition for providing quality health information to local consumers.

UAB's "Dear Doctors" column, which appears each Monday on the front page of The Birmingham News' Health section, earned a silver certificate for best newspaper article/series from the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC), which sponsors the annual National Health Information Awards. The awards are designed to recognize the nation's best in consumer health information programs and materials.

The award positions UAB alongside other winners like the Mayo Clinic, the March of Dimes, TIME Magazine, Kaiser Permanente, the National Cancer Institute, The Journal of the American Medical Association, the American Stroke Association and the American Diabetes Association. The winning entry was among nearly 1,000 entries judged by a national panel of health information experts.

"Dear Doctors" received a bronze certificate last year. Now in its 15th year of continuous publication, "Dear Doctors" brings community and state residents accurate health-promotion material and information. Lisa Mahaffey in UAB's Office of Medical Publications compiles and edits the column.
