BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dorothy L. Steiner of Birmingham has established an endowed scholarship in memory of her son, Bernard S. Steiner Jr., to benefit the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Business. The scholarship was approved by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees on Friday, November 17.

The Bernard S. Steiner Jr. Memorial Scholarship was created with a $50,000 gift to UAB. The scholarship will be an annual award used to assist outstanding students enrolled in the UAB School of Business.

“The scholarship is going to make a significant difference in our ability to attract excellent students for our business programs,” said Robert Holmes, Ph.D., dean of the UAB School of Business. “It’s through the generosity of donors like Mrs. Steiner that talented and deserving students will have the opportunity to complete their education and successfully launch their careers.”

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in or admitted to a degree-granting program in the UAB School of Business, have at least a 3.0 grade point average in any coursework completed prior to the time of the application and demonstrate a financial need. Recipients will be selected by a committee administered by the Office of Development and Alumni Relations in the UAB School of Business. Preference will be given to students majoring in accounting. Funds from the scholarship will be applied toward the recipient’s tuition and fees.

During his life, Steiner had been president of Steiner Bank, a Birmingham-based company. He died in 1988 at the age of 55.

Mrs. Steiner had been a long-time supporter of the former UAB Town and Gown Theatre. She also donated money to the Birmingham Museum of Art to create the Steiner Auditorium in memory of her late husband, Bernard S. Steiner Sr., and her late son, Bernard.
