Brock Family Endowed Nursing Scholarship

Campaign Newsletter: Spring 2003

For many years Harry B. and Jane H. Brock have enthusiastically supported UAB in a multitude of ways. Mr. and Mrs. Brock have served as goodwill ambassadors and community leaders in promoting university initiatives, including the current Campaign for UAB. In addition they have generously provided funding for Comprehensive Cancer Center projects, UAB Athletics programs and facilities, and educational programs.
Mr. and Mrs. Brock and their children, Barrett Brock MacKay, Harry B. Brock III, and Stanley M. Brock, recently decided to make a Campaign contribution from their family foundation that will provide long-term support for the education of nursing professionals at UAB. The Brock Family Endowed Nursing Scholarship, established in recognition of Barrett’s chosen career of nursing, will be awarded annually to a qualified student enrolled in the School of Nursing who is in financial need. Mrs. MacKay earned her M.S.N. at the UAB School of Nursing and worked for many years as a diabetes nurse educator at UAB before leaving her position to be at home with her young sons.

"The Brock family’s commitment to education is well known throughout Alabama," says Rachel Z. Booth, Ph.D., R.N., dean of the School of Nursing. "This gift extends that commitment in a way that will touch many other families, for as it supports future nurses, it also supports the patients for whom they will care. The Brocks’ desire to assist students with demonstrated financial need shows their compassion as well as their understanding of the rising cost of educating professional nurses. We greatly appreciate this support and look forward to awarding the first Brock scholarship in fall 2003.

"We were delighted to welcome Barrett Brock MacKay onto our Board of Visitors last year," Dean Booth adds. "There she joins other community leaders, some nurses and others from different professions and perspectives; who are committed to helping us excel in all areas of our mission."
