2000 – Judy L. Bezanson, DSN ’00, is Senior Science and Medicine Advisor at the National Center of the American Heart Association, where she is responsible for direction and guidance of the Cardiovascular Science Division and is actively involved with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative. She was named a Visionary Leader in 2010 by the UAB School of Nursing. (Updated August 2010)

2000 - Kelly A. Goudreau, PhD ‘00, is the 2010 Brenda Lyon Leadership Award recipient by the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). She was also selected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2012. (Updated July 2012)

1999 – Amy Atchison, BSN ’99 is the 2012 UAB Health System’s Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital Excellence in Nursing Award recipeint. (Updated May 2012)

1999 – Leanne C. Busby, PhD ’99 is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is Director of Nursing and Allied Health at the Tennessee Board of Regents and former Dean of the Jeanette Rudy School of Nursing at Cumberland University. Working with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, she was a co-project director to develop national curriculum guidelines and regulatory criteria for family nurse practitioners. Dr. Busby was named a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing in 2010. (Updated August 2010)

1999 – Mary H. Hill, PhD ’99 serves as Associate Dean and Professor in the Division of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences at Howard University in Washington, DC. Dr. Hill has demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity in nursing education and academia by developing, implementing and evaluating programs to enhance the success of economically and environmentally disadvantaged students. She was named a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing in 2010. (Updated August 2010)

1998 - Linda S. Smith, PhD ‘98 is full tenured Professor of Nursing and Nursing Program Director at Idaho State University.   Smith is the 2009 Educator of the Year for Southeast Idaho which recognizes an educator for their innovation, response to adversity, customer service, and commitment to the community and students. Smith was credited for helping ISU earn national acclaim for the unique, distance-based nursing education program she developed. (Updated July 2010)

1997 – Norma Cuellar, PhD ’97 is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

1997 – Sharon A. Denham, PhD ’97, is currently a professor at Ohio University’s School of Nursing and former President of the International Family Nursing Association. Dr. Denham’s research has largely focused on family health and Appalachian health disparities. She has numerous publications and has given many regional, national, and international presentations. Dr. Denham was named a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing in 2010. (Updated August 2010)

1996 – Marcia Holstad, PhD ’90, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and is an Assistant Professor at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University. Funded by the National Institutes of Health, she leads the Music Project, testing the efficacy of an audio music program aimed at educating and motivating people living with HIV to adhere to their antiretroviral medications. Dr. Holstad was named a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing in 2010. (Updated August 2010)

1994 – Wipada Kunaviktikul, PhD ’94 is a 2011 inductee of the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is currently one of only seven nursing professors in Thailand where she is the Director of the Nursing Policy and Outcome Center at the Faculty of Nursing, Chiang Mai University. She also serves on the World Health Organization’s steering committee for Nursing and Midwifery. She was recognized in 2010 as a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing. (Updated August 2014)

1994 - James L. Raper, PhD ’94 is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Nursing; the Director of the HIV Outpatient, Research and Dental Clinics; a Scientist in the Center for AIDS Research, and a Scholar in the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and was recognized in 2010 as a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing. 1992 – Judy W. Lott, PhD ’92, is an expert in the nursing field of neonatology. She is a Former Dean of Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. As a Visiting Professor at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, she taught and coordinated the first Neonatal Nurse Practitioner onsite clinical course. She was recognized in 2010 as a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. (Updated August 2010)

1992 - Anne Turner-Henson, PhD ‘92, is a Professor at the UAB School of Nursing and serves as the project director for the Leadership Education in Child-Health Nursing program. This program seeks to prepare the next generation of nursing faculty leaders in child-health nursing education who conduct biobehavioral research. She was recognized in 2010 as a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing. (Updated August 2010)

1991 – Ann R. Peden, PhD ’91 is Professor and Department Chair for Nursing at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. She designed an intervention to decrease negative thinking in individuals at risk for the development of depression which continues to be tested with low-income single mothers, pregnant women who smoke, and individuals with heart failure. She was recognized in 2010 as a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing. (Updated August 2010)

1987 – Davis Campbell, BSN ’87, MSN ’01 authored a book entitled A Place I Didn’t Want To Go: My Victory Over Cancer. Although he had no major risk factors, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer at age 43. He subsequently underwent major reconstructive surgery and harsh chemotherapy. Mr. Campbell is also the author of “Bladder Cancer: Revealing News About a Hidden Threat,” which was published in the April edition of Nursing 2006.

Through funding from the National Institutes for Health she was the first to conduct a clinical trial for cancer survivors who use acupuncture to reduce hot flashes. 1983 – Susan J. Gennaro, PhD ’83 is Dean and Professor of the Connell School of Nursing at Boston College. Funded by the NINR, Dr. Gennaro is currently studying mechanisms underlying preterm birth in minority women. 1982 – Dr. Karen Reed, MSN ’82 has just returned to the USA after 10 months as the US Fulbright Scholar for Cambodia 2013-2014. In that capacity, she taught undergraduate nursing at the Kampot Regional Training Center, one of Cambodia's five public nursing programs. Dr. Reed also worked with the Cambodian Ministry of Health to conduct faculty and clinical nurse preceptor workshops across the country. This was her fifth trip to Cambodia- which she calls her "heart home". She is the first nurse to ever receive a US Fulbright Scholar award for Cambodia. 1977 – Lora Lacey-Haun, BSN ’77, MSN ’80 is Dean and Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Nursing and developed distance education programs to expand access to nursing education nationally. Dr. Haun has been active in providing leadership for faculty and staff at the University of South Africa in Cape Town. She was honored by the UAB School of Nursing as a Visionary Leader in 2010. 1976 – Joanne Disch, MSN ’76 is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is Clinical Professor and Director of the Katharine J. Densford International Center for Nursing Leadership, and holds the Katherine R. and C. Walton Lillehei Chair in Nursing Leadership at the University of Minnesota. She has extensive experience as an educator, chief nurse executive, researcher, leader, policy maker, and spokesperson. She is the 1994 UAB School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and was named a Visionary Leader in 2010 by the UAB School of Nursing. (Updated August 2010)
Dr. Disch served as President of the American Academy of Nursing from 2012 to 2013. She co-authored a textbook entitled Person- and Family-Centered Care, published by Sigma Theta Tau International. As president of UAB, she chaired the board of the UAB Health System, which includes UAB Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic, and other entities of UAB's nationally-ranked patient care facilities. 1975 - Lisa Wright Eichelberger, BSN ‘75, MSN ‘79, PhD ‘87 serves as Dean and Professor of Clayton State University School of Nursing in Morrow, Georgia. The second edition of Eichelberger’s nursing theory textbook has been released, Sitzman, K. and Eichelberger, L.W. 1975 - Madeline G. Harris, BSN ‘75, MSN ‘90 is a 2010 inductee of the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame. She joined the Rural Breast Cancer Survivor’s Study at the UAB School of Nursing after retiring from the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Clinic. She is Chair of the Women’s Breast Health Funds at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. (Updated July 2010)

1975 – Alice S. Hill, MSN ’75 holds the John P. McGovern Distinguished Professorship and is Director of the Nursing PhD Program at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Her nationally funded research focuses on feeding efficiency and growth of extremely low birth weight infants. 1975 – N. Genell Lee, BSN ’75, MSN ’79 is the Executive Director for the Alabama Board of Nursing. Her previous professional nursing experience includes serving as the Nursing Director for Emergency Medicine at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center and Director for Emergency Services at UAB Hospital. 1975 – Sister Maurita Soukup, MSN ’75 serves as a Health Trustee for two medical centers in Iowa, and Nurse Consultant/Researcher in critical care and evidence-based practice for health systems nationally. Her life ministry has focused on clinical excellence for critically ill patients, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues. 1974 - Constance S. Hendricks, BSN ‘74, MSN ‘81 has a Joint Appointment as a Professor at the School of Nursing and the College of Education/Kinesiology at Auburn University. Previously she served as Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. She established the UAB School of Nursing Constance Hendricks Endowed Nursing Scholarship that supports nursing students at UAB who demonstrate a financial need and are committed to a career in nursing. She is the 2007 UAB School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and was named a Visionary Leader by the UAB School of Nursing in 2010. 1974 – Kathleen A. Ladner, MSN ’74 is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the UAB School of Nursing. Previously she served as Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer at four complex acute care facilities in the Southeast and is a retired Captain in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. 1974 – Martha G. Lavender, MSN ’74, PhD ’88 directed the development of a 33-member research team to secure a $3.2 million cooperative agreement to study the health effects of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) exposure on residents of Anniston, Alabama. Currently, she is Assistant to the President at Gadsden State Community College in Gadsden, Alabama. She was recognized as a Visionary Leader in 2010 by the UAB School of Nursing. She is the Harriet Williamson Endowed Chair in Nephrology Nursing and a Professor in the Schools of Nursing and Medicine at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. 1969 – Joyce Clifford*, MSN ‘69 was a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She established The Institute for Nursing Healthcare Leadership, Inc. where she served as president and chief executive officer. She was described as the architect of nursing’s professional practice model — a model that has been recognized nationally and internationally in hospital and out-patient/community settings. 1961 – Marguerite Kinney Handlin, BSN ’61, MSN ’67 is a Professor Emeritus at the UAB School of Nursing and a nationally recognized expert in cardiovascular surgical nursing. She was instrumental in establishing initiatives to showcase better patient outcomes in health care when nursing and medicine work as colleagues. She is the 2000 UAB School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and was recognized as a Visionary Leader in 2010 by the UAB School of Nursing, as well. (Updated August 2010)

1958 – Norma K. Mobley, MSN ’58 is Dean and Professor Emerita at the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Previously, while at UAB School of Nursing, she led curriculum innovations that solidified the School’s position among baccalaureate programs both regionally and nationally. 1958 – Marie L. O’Koren*, MSN ’58 was Professor and Dean Emeritus at the UAB School of Nursing. During her tenure as dean at UAB SON, she changed the landscape of nursing education in the state of Alabama and raised its national prominence whereby it was named a top 20 nursing school in the country. Kelley, BSN ’56 is Professor Emeritus at the UAB School of Nursing where she spearheaded the growth of graduate nursing education preparing exceptional nurse leaders in academia and health care and helped establish the first professional doctoral program in nursing in the entire southeast. In 2010, she was recognized by the SREB as a nurse educator who has made significant contributions to nursing education during the past decades.
