Post-BSN to DNP Pathway for Nurse Practitioners

The Post-BSN to DNP Pathway for Nurse Practitioners is for professional nurses who have completed the BSN degree or its equivalent degree. The Post-BSN to DNP Pathway combines DNP core curriculum with advanced practice core, support and specialty courses that include both didactic and clinical practicum courses.

  • A BSN from a regionally accredited institution, equivalent to the one offered by UAB School of Nursing
  • Possess an unencumbered nursing license to practice nursing in the state where you plan to complete your coursework (didactic and clinical). Both UAB and the School of Nursing must have current authorization to operate in the state.
  • An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale either cumulatively or on the last 60 semester credit hours. A 3.5 or higher GPA is recommended.
  • Standardized test score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). There is no minimum score, however all sections of the GRE must be completed prior to application (verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing).
  • Applicants should submit an official transcript from every college or university they have ever attended (even if for only one semester). Transcripts may be mailed or emailed electronically by the issuing institution to the UAB School of Nursing.

  • Current CPR certification.
  • Three (3) letters of professional reference attesting to the applicant’s potential for graduate study
  • A resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
  • A personal interview by phone with a School of Nursing faculty member or designee.
  • Some specialty tracks may require specific clinical practice experience prior to enrollment in a specialty courses
