Biography
Becky J. Christian, PhD, RN, is a Professor in the Department of Community Health, Outcomes, and Systems, School of Nursing. Dr. Christian received a BSN degree and an MSN degree in family/child nursing from the University of Missouri-Columbia, as well as a PhD in Nursing from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Christian’s academic nursing career has included teaching at the University of Missouri-Columbia, The University of Texas at Austin, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (tenured), and University of Utah (tenured). Dr. Christian’s clinical nursing expertise has focused on children and adolescents and their families across a variety of health care settings (i.e., acute and chronic care pediatrics, adolescents with mental health problems and addictive diseases, newborn nursery, and rehabilitation). Dr. Christian’s program of research is focused on both children and adolescents with chronic illness and how families adapt to and manage their child's chronic illness. Dr. Christian has been funded by NINR/NIH to test the effectiveness of an intervention to improve the physiologic, functional, psychosocial, and developmental health of school-age children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

Research/Clinical Interest
Children and adolescents with chronic illness and disabilities (e.g., cystic fibrosis, diabetes, cancer, juvenile arthritis, obesity, spina bifida, cerebral palsy) – physiologic, functional, psychosocial, and developmental health status; coping with chronic illness and quality of life; self-competence and peer relationships; self-identity and disclosure; disease management and integration of chronic illness into everyday lives; school-based interventions (quantitative and qualitative research methods).
Family adaptation to their child’s chronic illness – coping and integration of chronic illness into everyday life, disease management and maintaining satisfactory quality of life; family caregiver burden (quantitative and qualitative research methods).
