Homecoming Week, one of UAB’s oldest traditions, is always an exciting week for everyone involved. The School of Nursing “Unleashed the Dragon” in a big way.
|Door Decoration Competition, October 28th
To set the tone for Homecoming week 2013 and promote school spirit, students, faculty and staff, participated in the annual Door Decoration Competition. Using the theme for homecoming 2013, each unit/department decorated a door on the first and second floor of the school. The second floor won the overall “Best Door” award for their creativity and best use of space.
|The Dragon is Unleashed! October 29th
Blazer spirit was rampant in front of the School of Nursing as SON cheerleaders tumbled out of a 20 foot cave. Enthusiasm was high as a crowd of more than 100 SON Blazer fans watched Dr. Watts remove the chains to unleash the dragon. The school was decorated with a building-sized mural of the “SON Team” and the traditional pomped Blaze. Immediately following the judging, everyone enjoyed a cook-out sponsored by the Student Affairs Office and Ice Cream from the SON Alumni Chapter. We are proud to say that the SON took second place in the campus-wide Building Decoration Competition.
|Gurney Derby - October 30th
The Nurse Anesthesia “Hawlin Gas” represented the SON in the annual Gurney Derby Competition. A special thanks to Dr. Laura Wright and Todd Hicks for serving as the “On Call Nurses” for the event!
|Annual Chili Cook-Off - October 31st
Faculty, staff, and students look forward to the annual chili cook-off sponsored by the SON Support and Recognition Committee. Ten teams participated this year. Creativity was rampant not only with the chili and the table presentations, but several teams sported costumes ranging from hot chili peppers to superman. Following the awards presentation, our “Men in Nursing" chili-cook off team gathered the leftovers and delivered them to the Firehouse Shelter. What a great way to give back to others in the Birmingham community.
|Annual Homecoming Parade and Softball Tournament - November 1st
To continue our Blazer spirit, the SON participated in the Annual Homecoming Parade with a float, created by our students, and two cars showcasing our Student Nurses Association and Mr. and Mrs. Green and Gold. That evening, the SON competed in a softball tournament against the School of Business, Education, and the College of Arts and Sciences. The School of Nursing remains the softball champs for the third year in a row.
Tailgate and Homecoming Game - November 2nd
The week culminated with a homecoming tailgate at our tent in Blazer Village where numerous Blazer fans received free blood pressure checks from our nursing students. Keeping with the Homecoming theme, our tent featured our 10 foot pomped blaze, and our blaze head which attracted numerous fans for photo opportunities. During the half-time festivities, nursing students, Andrew Eubanks and Emily Bray were honored as members of the Mr. and Mrs. UAB Homecoming Court. This was a first for the SON. We are proud to announce that Andrew Eubanks was selected as the first alternate for Mr. UAB. Way to go Andrew!
