UAB School of Nursing Training and Health Requirements

CPR—All RN faculty and contract RN staff are required to have and maintain CPR
certification. This requirement includes a minimum of the following:

  1. Healthcare Provider Course (American Heart Association) or
  2. Professional Rescuer Course (American Red Cross)

Certifications for specialty rescue, such as PALS and ACLS, will not meet the basic requirement for Healthcare Provider certification.


HIPAA Training—Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act course: All employees are required to complete this training within five days of employment at UAB.

FERPA TrainingThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act course is designed to give you an overview of the federal law on student records and UAB’s related policies and guidelines for the appropriate use of student records. Understanding the rules related to the security and confidentiality of student records will protect you and the institution from potential violations of federal law and will help you to be a responsible user of student information. All faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to self-register for the course.


OSHA Training
or the Bloodbourne Pathogens Course—This training session, offered by the University Occupational Health and Safety Department, is completed annually by all students, faculty, and individuals who may enter a clinical setting. Choose the Education and Training tab and select course #BIO300-Bloodbourne Pathogens Course. You may have to self-register.    

Research Code of Conduct Agreement—This information related to the adherence to federal and state laws and regulations applicable to any research programs is to be reviewed and signed by all faculty, staff, and students. The agreement can be accessed through the Research Compliance Web site.


Diversity Training—
One of UAB’s goals is to educate faculty and staff on the importance of diversity and issues of equitable treatment of all people without regard to race, culture, age, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic class, or any other difference. This two-part training session, which includes both online and classroom training is critical to UAB’s vision of being an internationally known research university. Both the online and classroom sessions of diversity training are to be completed within 30 days of employment at UAB.


Effort Report Education and Compliance Training
—This training offers a session regarding best practices for accurate completion of effort reports. All faculty and staff must complete this one-time training if supported by a sponsored project. It should be completed within two weeks of your becoming funded in this manner.


Defensive Driver Training—UAB requires all employees, except UAB police, who operate a UAB vehicle as part of his or her regular duties to attend this course once every three years. New employees should attend this course within 90 days of employment. An Alabama driver’s license is required to be able to drive a state vehicle. This course is offered by the Occupation Health and Safety Department, course #DDC4: Defensive Driving Training.


Health Requirements—All RN faculty and staff must follow health requirements specific to the clinical agency where they or their students are engaged in clinical learning activities.  These requirements include, but may not be limited to, Hepatitis B (HBV) verification and Tuberculosis (TB) verification. Upon initial employment, faculty will submit health-clearance documentation from their own health-care provider for a completed series of HBV and provide evidence of current TB compliance. Annually, before the first day of class in a fall term, but no later than September 1, faculty will submit updated information relative to the annual TB skin-test screen. Health-clearance information for TB can be obtained annually from the UAB Employee Health Clinic located at Spain Wallace, Room 123 (phone 934-3675). This information should be submitted to the Director of Operations Office, room 207.
