SON Students Help Stop Hunger Now

It takes more than you think to feed a family for a week. Not just money, but the ingenuity and creativity to put food on the table when resources are scarce. More than 870 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. But as of now, 60,000 of these will because of the efforts of UAB students, including School of Nursing students.

On November 14, 2013, over 30 nursing students joined the Stop Hunger Now project and packaged 10,000 highly nutritious, dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. Each package provides a reasonable serving for six. The meals are easy to transport, store and distribute to those in greatest need.

The Stop Hunger Now food packaging event was organized by the UAB Office of Undergraduate Student Engagement, the UAB Office of Graduate Student Engagement and the Sparkman Center for Global Health.   Our office of International Affairs spread the word through faculty at SON and the Student Nurses Association to recruit volunteers for the event and had a great response!

One of the event organizers said, “the School of Nursing students were a significant reason this week was so successful” – we agree! What a great student body we have.

The next Stop Hunger Now event will be on November 13, 2014. Stay tuned for details.
