Shirey receives Alumni Legacy Leader Award

Maria R. Shirey, PhD, MBA, RN, NE-BC, FACHE, FAAN, assistant dean of clinical affairs and partnerships at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing has been selected to receive the Alumni Legacy Leader Award from Indiana University. Recipients were chosen from a group of associates, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorally prepared alumni from the university and were nominated by their peers. 100 individuals were chosen to receive this distinguished award.


Vance publishes 100th first author, peer-reviewed manuscript

Vance, PhD, MGS, SON Assistant Professor recently hit the milestone of 100 first author, peer-reviewed published manuscripts with the publication of "Conducting an article critique for a quantitative research study: perspectives for doctoral students and other novice readers" in the journal Nursing Research and Reviews. 


Students from Wonju College of Medicine in South Korea visit UAB School of Nursing

Korean Students cropDeuk Kyung Kim and Seung Min-Lee, nursing students from Wonju College of Medicine, at Yonsei University, South Korea, participated in a competitive two-week exchange program at the UAB School of Nursing.  The students worked closely with mentor Dr. Youngshook Han from February 3 until February 14.

They shadowed various classes and clinical settings throughout their two-week stay. Both Min-Lee and Kim stayed on campus with other students.


Harper named to Department of Veterans Affairs’ Special Medical Advisory Group

Doreen C. Harper, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of the UAB School of Nursing, has been selected for a two-year appointment on the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Special Medical Advisory Group (SMAG). As a member of the Federal Advisory Committee, Harper will be part of a committee that provides advice to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the Under Secretary for Health on matters relating to the care and treatment of Veterans and other matters pertinent to the operations of the Veterans Health Administration.

Anne Turner-Henson, DSN, RN, FAAN, professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, received The Leadership in Research Award at the 2014 Sothern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) annual conference. This award, not given every year, is based on the outstanding merit of a member's leadership, contribution to society, and promotion of nursing and health care research.
