Four of Five Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame Inductees are UAB SON Alumni


Four exceptional University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing alumni and professional leaders are 2013 inductees into the Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame. 

The induction ceremony took place Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at the Bryant Conference Center at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Maria Shirey, Ph.D., RN, FACHE, FAAN, assistant dean for clinical affairs and partnerships and professor in the Department of Community Health, Outcomes and Systems in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, has been elected president of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) for the 2013-15 term. Shirey began serving in that role on July 1 after having served as president-elect from 2011-13.

UAB’s Meneses named to CDC Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women

Karen Meneses, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., professor and associate dean for research in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing and co‐leader of the Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center has been appointed to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women. The committee was chartered in 2010 and consists of external experts and stakeholders who advise the CDC in developing, implementing and evaluating evidence-based approaches to advance the understanding and awareness of breast cancer among young women.
