Veterans CAN! 

The UAB School of Nursing offers a special initiative, Veterans Career Advancement in Nursing (Veterans CAN!), through a grant from the Health Research Services Administration (HRSA), to veterans who served as a LPN or medic/corpsman in the military to transition into a professional nursing career and earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing.

  • Career goal of becoming a professional Registered NurseServed as LPN or medic /corpsman in the military within the last 5 years*
  • Served as LPN or medic /corpsman in the military within the last 5 years*
  • Provide a copy of DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty
  • Completion of a minimum of 4 pre-requisite nursing courses with at least a 2.75 GPA

*Training and experience over 5 years will require a waiver and additional validation process

Getting Started


  • Students may apply to Veterans CAN! after completing a minimum of 4 pre-requisite courses with a minimum 2.75 GPA
  • Students must maintain a 2.75 GPA to remain in the pre-nursing Veterans CAN!
  • All Veterans CAN! pre-nursing students must apply to the UAB School of Nursing BSN program using the same process/deadline as all BSN applicants
