Undergraduate & Graduate Scholarships and Financial Aid
The School of Nursing at UAB has excellent scholarship, traineeship, fellowship and loan programs in which many undergraduate and graduate students participate. All currently enrolled students and students with a valid application submitted to the School for the spring 2014 semester are eligible to apply. The deadline to submit applications for the spring 2015 semester is October 31, 2014.
The following scholarship opportunities can be found outside the School of Nursing’s Scholarship office. Please note websites, phone numbers and/or addresses following each opportunity.
Air Force ROTC Nurse Scholarship - Air Force ROTC two and three year nursing scholarships. These scholarships pay tuition, fees, textbook reimbursement, and a $100 monthly allowance. Active duty obligation is four years upon completion of program. For more information, contact the Air Force ROTC at (205) 836-4124 or (205) 870-2954. Alabama State Nursing Scholarship - This $600 scholarship is available only to Alabama residents who have been admitted to and are currently attending clinical nursing courses with a 2.5 grade point average or higher in the School of Nursing undergraduate program. A student receiving these funds must plan to work within the state of Alabama for at least one year immediately after graduation. If the student does not work within the state, these funds become a loan and must be repaid. The UAB Financial Aid Office administers this scholarship.
Army ROTC Scholarship - Army ROTC nurse scholarships are offered for four, three, and two years on a competitive basis. Each scholarship pays full tuition and required educational fees up to $17,000 per year, $600 for textbooks, and a monthly stipend, currently $250 for every year the scholarship is in effect. All three and four year scholarships will also receive an incentive of $1,000 yearly for every year the scholarship is in effect. Special consideration for an Army ROTC scholarship is given to students pursuing degrees in nursing. For more information, contact the UAB Army ROTC Department at (205) 934-7215.
Brookwood Medical Center Scholarship - Brookwood offers undergraduate and graduate scholarships to nursing students enrolled in accredited nursing schools who meet the following criteria: overall “B” average (3.0 on 4.0 scale), a “B” in nursing courses, member of Association of Nursing Students preferred, and recommendation from faculty advisor and Financial Aid Office. A contract must be signed by the scholarship recipient, which obligates him/her to work full-time at Brookwood Medical Center immediately after graduation for one or two years depending on the length of time the recipient was supported by Brookwood Medical Center. Sigma Theta Tau Scholarship - Up to a total amount of $1,500 each year is available for full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are in good standing. Preference will be given to active Sigma Theta Tau International members. However, membership in Sigma Theta Tau International is not a requirement. A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 is required, and for graduate students, a GRE score of 1,000 (Quantitative and Verbal) if required for admission, is highly desired. Scholarship period is September 1 to August 31.
UAB National Alumni Society Scholarships - The UAB National Alumni Society provided $750,000 in scholarships, grants, and gifts to the university last year. The society is very proud to offer much-needed scholarship assistance to incoming freshman, transfer students, graduate students, upperclassmen and international students. Alabama State Nurses’ Association Educational Loan - Educational loans are available to registered nurses who are members of ASNA and are working to complete advanced nursing programs either full-time or part-time. The applicant must presently be enrolled or accepted in good standing into an Alabama-approved school of nursing. ASNA membership is required until the loan is repaid. Contact local ASNA chapter president for additional information.
Army Student Nurse Program - A student who has completed the second year may enlist voluntarily in the Women’s Army Corps Reserve and continue her education for a period not to exceed 24 months. The selectee will be placed in pay grade E-3 and will receive full pay and allowances. In addition, tuition, fees, and books will be paid by the Department of the Army. Six months prior to graduation, the student will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. Selectees are required to serve on active duty 24 months after graduation, if participation in the program was 12 months or less. If two years’ support has been given, the selectee serves 36 months on active duty. For more information, contact the local Army Recruiting Office.
Associated Health Professions and Occupations Affiliated Educational Programs Veterans Administration - Master’s level advanced nurse practitioners trainee support and nursing administration practicum support. Funds are provided for student support for the clinical practicum experience at the VA Medical Centers for students enrolled in the master’s level clinical nurse specialty areas in Geriatrics, Rehabilitation, Critical Care, and Psychiatric-Mental Health and for students enrolled in the master’s level Nursing Administration Practicum program. College Work Study Program (CWSP) - This program provides part-time employment for students. Students usually work 10 to 20 hours per week at the prevailing federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. Eligibility is based on need and determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid using information from the student’s completed file. This program is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Federal Direct Stafford Loan (3.5% - 8.25%) - This is a long-term loan, which UAB initially recommends and for which the Federal Government provides funds. The loan rate varies from 3.5-8.25% percent depending upon when the loan is first received. The Federal Direct Stafford Loan is repayable 6 months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time. The maximum amount one can borrow is $12,500 for undergraduate and non-degree graduate students and $20,500 for graduate students.

Graduate Assistantship - A Graduate Assistantship position is available through the office of the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. This assistantship provides for an annual stipend and eligibility for in-state tuition. In addition, Graduate Assistants who are nursing graduate students may be eligible to receive support for their tuition and fees through a Professional Nurse Traineeship. Jefferson County Medical Auxiliary Loan - Criteria: enrolled or accepted for enrollment in the University of Alabama School of Nursing, University of Alabama at Birmingham, have intent to practice nursing in the State of Alabama after graduation, and have financial need. Preference will be given to applicant(s) with upper level status. Application deadline is April 1st and notification of award by June 1st. Repayment is expected to begin nine months after graduation or withdrawal from the School of Nursing in equal monthly payments. Full repayment must be made within three years. National Health Service Corps - The National Health Service Corps provides for two types of financial assistance; scholarships and loan repayment programs. Only students who plan to enroll in the master’s options for Nurse Practitioners are eligible for these programs. Students are encouraged to investigate these options prior to admission to the master’s program. Navy Nurse Corps Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program - A BSN student who has completed the second year may enlist voluntarily in the Naval Reserve, as Officer Candidates Under Instruction and continue his/her education for a period not to exceed 24 months. Qualified candidates receive full pay and allowances of an E-3 (approximately $1,200/month) for up to 24 months of full-time education. Upon graduation, the student will be commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps, and will be obligated to serve for 4 years active duty service. Nurses’ Educational Funds, Inc. - Scholarships in the amount of $2,500-$10,000 are available to master’s and doctoral degree students from the NEF. For an application, write: Nurses Educational Funds, 555 West 57th Street, New York, New York 10019. Deadline is March 1st of each year, and awards are announced in May.
Parents Loan For Undergraduate Students (PLUS) - This is a long-term loan available to parents of dependent students or to independent students at any income level. The annual loan limit is the cost of attendance minus other aid. This loan requires a separate application which is available at www.studentloans.gov.
Pell Grant - This grant is for a 9-month period and is available only to undergraduate students who have not received a baccalaureate degree. Eligibility is determined by use of a national formula. Must be enrolled at least half time and grant is usually limited to five full years of study.
Perkins Loans - This is a long term, low interest loan which is repayable 9 months after the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time. There is no payment of principal or interest during periods of at least half-time enrollment. Eligibility is based on need and is determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid using information from the student’s completed file. This program is available to both undergraduate and graduate students.
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) - This grant at UAB is for a maximum of $1500 per academic year. Eligibility is determined by the UAB Office of Student Financial Aid using information from the student’s completed file. This grant is available to pell grant recipients enrolled at least half-time.
