The roar of nearby airplanes, “parachuted-cargo” balloon centerpieces, and guests dressed in army gear and hospital scrubs added to the authenticity of this year’s flight-themed MASH (Make Another Scholarship Happen) event. Patrons of the annual fund-raiser, hosted by the Board of Visitors (BOV) of the School of Nursing at UAB, gathered at the HealthSouth corporate hangar at the Birmingham International Airport on April 25, 2008, to recognize and raise awareness for the school.

“Each year with MASH, we remind those already familiar with our mission about the need for scholarships, and we enlighten new friends who attend our event,” says BOV Chair Elizabeth Wallace. The BOV strives to help the school educate as many nurses as possible. “We have found the best way to accomplish this is to educate the public about what a fine nursing school we have and also about the need for more nurses.”

This year’s event honored UAB critical-care transport nurses and celebrated the 25th anniversary of the UAB Critical Care Transport team, which takes seriously ill patients in emergencies to hospitals across the country. In addition to the main focus of raising money for scholarships, the 2008 event also honored military health-care personnel.

BOV Co-Chair Barrett MacKay says, “It was very special having the UAB critical-care transport nurses at the event along with their air and ground transportation units. It was a visible reminder of the incredible ways in which nurses serve our community. Several members of the team are graduates of the UAB School of Nursing.”

Wallace adds, “We are indebted to those corporations, businesses, physicians, and other individuals who remember us each year in their giving. They enable us to hold a fine event and raise funds for nursing scholarships.” Among the supporters for the 2008 MASH event were “High Flyers”: the Harry B. and Jane H. Brock Foundation, Fay and Bill Ireland, the Thomas E. Jernigan Foundation, Protective Life Corporation, and UAB Administration. “Gliders” included Candi and C.P. Bagby, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Janice and Bill Ferguson, Everett Holle, Joie and Bob Jones, Pam and Sam Miller, LaVona and Billy Rushton, Sterne Agee, and UAB Hospital/UAB Health System. Several other community leaders and organizations offered their support as well.
