Jean Riley Tomlinson greatly appreciates the quality health care she and her family has received at University Hospital over the past 55 years, and she is especially thankful for the excellent care her husband, Jack O. Tomlinson has received over the past 17 years from the staff of the Department of Cardiology. “UAB doctors and nurses saved his like more than once” she emphasizes, “and will be forever grateful for their skill and compassion.”
“My many years of serving the School of Nursing Board of Visitors have provided me one way to show my appreciation to those doctors and nurses, “ adds Mrs. Tomlinson, who is a charter member of the board and served as the second chair. “Setting up this endowed scholarship, which I hope will give preference to students with demonstrated financial need and who intend to pursue a career in cardiac nursing, is another way to express my gratitude.”
“Jean’s investment of time and energy has significantly benefited our school over many years of service on the Board of Visitors,” notes Dean Rachel Z. Booth, Ph.D., R.N. “She has worked tirelessly and cheerfully to make the Boards annual fund raising event a success, and she has provided us with so many good ideas and much good advice too. By establishing this scholarship, Jean is ensuring that her investment will continue to bring returns for generations to come.”
“The School of Nursing could not have achieved or sustained its outstanding reputation for innovation and excellence in educating healthcare professionals without the strong commitment of faithful supporters such as Mrs. Tomlinson. We greatly appreciate all the time she has given to support the school’s programs and activities, and we are especially grateful for the endowed scholarship she has established, “notes Shirley Salloway Kahn, Ph.D., vice president for development, alumni and external relations.
