Mr. Thomas (Tom) Jernigan Sr. recalls that it was his good friend Robert (Bob) Luckie Jr. who suggested he endow a scholarship for the School of Nursing. That prompted Tom and his wife, Donna, to donate the funds to create the Jernigan Endowed Nursing Scholarship in 1991.
Over the years the couple has continued to generously support the UAB School of Nursing. As they have learned more about the nursing profession, they recognized that a valuable role nurses play in health care. To encourage future generations of nurses to dedicate themselves to giving their patients competent, personalized care, Mr. and Mrs. Jernigan recently pledged additional funds for the endowed scholarship.
“The Jernigans’ commitment to supporting scholarships has had a tremendous impact on the lives of more than a dozen nursing students since their gift established the endowment in 1991. Those students are now in professional practice, thanks to Tom and Donna’s foresight and generously, and they are now doing real work for nursing-providing excellent care to patients and their families, “ notes Rachel Z. Booth. Ph.D., R.N., Dean of the School of Nursing. “This additional gift will support even more students in years to come.”
“We are most grateful to Tom and Donna Jernigan for their generous support of the School of Nursing,” adds Shirley Salloway Khan, Ph.D., vice president for development, alumni, and external relations. “This endowment will continue to make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students who have the potential to become our leaders of tomorrow. The Jernigans have truly made an investment in the future of health care.”
