Program Goal:

The GAANN financial award is to prepare nurse scholars from traditionally underrepresented groups in the state of Alabama at the PhD level for careers in educational leadership, research and scholarship. A dual purpose is served in preparing these young scholars by increasing the diversity of nursing faculty, and thereby enhancing the capacity for interaction with underrepresented patient populations. 

A minimum of three GAANN Fellows will be selected annually from the pool of talented and promising BSN and MSN graduates who plan to engage in full-time study at UAB School of Nursing toward a PhD degree in Nursing with evidence of a commitment to a career in teaching and research within institutions of higher education in Alabama and the southeastern U.S.   Special emphasis and consideration is given to members of underrepresented groups and students whose course study is in a field designated as an area of national need.

Qualifications:

• Full-time enrollment and/or acceptance as a graduate student at the University of Alabama School of Nursing.
• Demonstration of financial need based on student financial aid (FASFA).
• Plans for a future career to teach in an academic nursing institution
• United States Citizenship or Resident Nationals with specific residency requirements
• Members of underrepresented groups (African-Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans, Hispanics, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and women) are particularly encouraged to apply.
