Student organizations and activities are great places to enrich your college experience. The students at the School of Nursing have the opportunity to participate in organizations that will help them develop leadership skills.
The School of Nursing has leadership positions for students where they can participate in the operations and decisions made through the school’s committee process. The students serve on these committees for a one year term that begins during the fall semester each year. Elections are held during the summer semester to select nursing students to represent their peers. Eligible students can nominate a classmate or self-nominate for any committee position, as long as they have two semesters remaining in a nursing program at the start of the fall semester. For more information, contact the Director of Student Evaluations and Scholarships at (205) 934-5483.
Students enrolled in graduate programs in the School of Nursing are members of the NGSA. The NGSA’s main functions are to provide service to the School of Nursing graduate students and to facilitate communication between graduate students and the School of Nursing faculty, administration, and UAB. Funding is provided by student service fees. For more information contact the Director of Student Evaluations and Scholarships at (205) 934-5483. The UAB-SNA (Student Nursing Association) promotes and upholds high professional standards, aids in the professional growth and development of students, promotes professional and social unity among nursing students, and acquaints students with the professional nursing organizations, Membership in the UAB-SNA is open to students in the School of Nursing at UAB. Membership in the UAB organization also provides for membership in the Alabama Association of Nursing Students, as well as the National Student Nurses Association. As a knowledge and leadership organization, the honor society of nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, responds to health- and nursing-profession trends and issues that are germane to its mission. The UAB chapter (Nu chapter) was chartered in 1958, the 12th chapter to be chartered by STTI. For more information, contact the Dr. Lygia Holcomb at (205) 966-6935. In cooperation between the School of Nursing, UAB Career Services, and University Hospital, pre-nursing Shadowing sessions are held every semester. Currently enrolled UAB pre-nursing students may register for a session through the UAB Career Services Office. The shadowing program consists of an introduction from the School of Nursing, an orientation on what to expect from the shadowing experience, and an afternoon of shadowing a professional nurse at University Hospital. |
