Household hazardous wastes (HHW) are common materials found in the home (cleaners, solvents, paint) that would be classified and regulated as hazardous waste if generated by industries (or colleges, hospitals and research labs). However, HHW is not subject to the same stringent rules as regular hazardous waste and much of it is improperly disposed of or allowed to build up to dangerous levels in homes.
UAB's collection event will be held on Friday, April 10, 2015 from 10 am - 2 pm. It is open only to UAB students, faculty and staff so bring your ID along with your waste. Take this opportunity to rid your home of these dangerous items.

Spring has finally arrived and with it, spring storms. Alabama can have some of the more violent spring storms in the country. In fact, recent data from the National Weather Service (NWS) indicates that the region of the state served by the local NWS office is second behind a region in Mississippi for tornado warnings. That includes areas in the Midwest!
The key to staying safe is preparation. Know what your risk is and know what kind of action you need to take when a watch or warning is issued. The NWS has prepared an excellent resource for increasing your knowledge and tools to help you stay safe.
