Controlled substances (CS) are drugs or chemicals whose manufacture, possession and use are regulated by the state and federal governments. This may include illegal drugs, prescription medications or chemicals used to manufacture drugs.
UAB currently maintains federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrations governing the use of controlled substances for research, veterinary care, and teaching purposes. The Department of Occupational Health and Safety, through its Controlled Substances Program, currently administers and oversees the use of controlled substances in these areas.
