Who is Required to Take This Course?
This is an online course and is required for any Principal Investigator (PI) that will be applying for a Controlled Substance Use Authorization (CSUA) Number. Only PI’s are allowed to apply for a CSUA Number. This course will show you how to apply for a CSUA, how to maintain it, and the responsibility of everyone involved.
UAB currently maintains federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registrations governing the use of Controlled Substances for teaching purposes, veterinary care, and all non-human research. Research using Controlled Substances in human trial are not administered through this program.

This course is required by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and UAB’s Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Controlled Substances Program.

The DEA defines Controlled Substances as:
  • Chemicals whose manufacture, possession, and use will be regulated by the DEA
  • Addictive Substances that have medicinal properties
  • Illegal drugs as well as prescription medicines
  • Mind-altering substances
    Used as or in Analgesics (pain control), anesthetics, and sedation
At the conclusion, participants should be able to:
  1. Complete and submit a Controlled Substances Use Authorization (CSUA) Application.
  2. Learn how to maintain that Authorization.
  3. Understand his/her responsibilities that come with applying for an authorization for Controlled Substances.
  4. Train his/her staff to follow the guidelines set forth by the UAB Controlled Substances Program.
Steps to receive a CSUA:
  1. Complete all required training (OHS_CS245 and OHS_CS246)
  2. Complete and submit CSUA
  3. Contact the Controlled Substances Manager at 205-934-2487 to set up a time for an audit/inspection of your work area
Note: The only way to receive an Authorization Number to use Controlled Substances at UAB is to complete all of these steps.
