Hi! My name is Ken Hayashida and I'm currently a senior resident at the Children's Hospital of Orange County in California. My interests in medical information systems and communication stem from previous experience at Rockwell International's space shuttle division as a summer hire in engineering. I worked on computerized math models of space shuttle thermal protection systems in order to optimize shuttle reentry trajectories.
As I moved through my pre-medical training at USC, the university began to deploy a massive wide-area network for students' use. These systems originally started as simple print shops for reports. When I returned to the USC School of Medicine, I found that the university's network had expanded to include Unix workstations at the medical library, plus a broad array of PC's and platforms in support of student computing. Hence, I've been on the Internet for 4 years now.
Recently, as a resident at CHOC, I began to notice that while academia and scientists had moved quickly to adopt e-mail as a quick and efficient communications tool, the medical community was lagging behind. After attending AAP's Annual Meeting as the program delegate to the Resident Section, I applied and was fortunate enough to be named as the Resident Section Liaison to the Section on Computers.
Currently, the Resident Section is attempting to survey residents and programs in order to plan the development of national communications tools between residents and programs. If you would like to help in this national effort, please feel free to contact me at (310) 596-1234 or via my email account at khayash@ix.netcom.com
Thanks for reading.
