SCOT Meeting Plans

AAP Fall Meeting, Boston, MA

Saturday, October 26, 1996

11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Computer Lab

The AAP Section on Computers and Other Technologies (SCOT) has offered the Computer Lab to audiences of enthusiastic pediatricians in the Exhibit Hall at Academy meetings since 1992. At the 1996 Annual Meeting, faculty who have experience in the field of computer technology will once again demonstrate hardware and software and conduct small group sessions on various topics relevant to pediatric practice. Following these didactic sessions, faculty will lead participants in "hands-on" practice on the computer. Space is limited -- look for a detailed schedule in the on-site meeting program and at the Computer Lab itself. Stop by the booth to sign up for the sessions that interest you and to pick up information about joining the section.

Section Program

Computer Applications to Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance (joint with the Committee on Quality Improvement) Quality Assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI) are becoming increasingly important in pediatric practice, especially in the current healthcare environment with the augmented presence of managed care. The use of information processing and decision support capabilities of the computer will play important roles in facilitating QA and QI. This seminar will begin with an overview of QI/QA concepts including a discussion of the development of performance improvement measures. We will then look at actual applications of QI/QA techniques using computer-based decision support tools. Finally, the use of computers in pediatric continuing medical education will be demonstrated as QI/QA for professional development.
