The Department is responsible for the protection and safety of approximately 15,000 staff and 16,500 students. The campus is comprised of over 10 million square feet of multi-level buildings in 77 contiguous blocks of urban property less than one quarter mile from downtown Birmingham. UAB is a major research, teaching and learning institution with internationally renown medical facilities that include a major Transplant Center, Level I Trauma Center, Psychiatric Center and much more. UAB is the largest employer in the State of Alabama.
The campus and the Medical Center properties are active twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and throughout all holidays.
The Department consists of ninety-two (92) personnel, with fifty-nine (59) sworn Officer positions. Officer sworn status is derived from state law and a State of Alabama Commission along with a joint Commission from the City of Birmingham Police Department. We see ourselves as maintaining the leading edge in campus law enforcement, and were nationally accredited in July of 1995.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Be a minimum of 21 years of age.
Have no prior felony criminal convictions or prior convictions for crimes of moral turpitude.
Must have a valid Alabama drivers license and have a satisfactory driving record.
Must have earned a high school diploma or G.E.D.
Be in good physical and mental health, capable of passing a medical examination, a psychological screening examination, a polygraph examination, and a physical skills/proficiencies standards required of the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission(A.P.O.S.T.C.) a t a minimum standards academy.
Must be able to fire a minimum score of 76% (APOSTC Course of Fire) at the time of hire.
Be willing and able to work all assigned shifts and days of the week.
Possess at least one year prior experience as a sworn and certified law enforcement officer (includes law enforcement certified, reserve status), or possess similarly related military experience, or as a non-sworn UAB PD member for at least one year of continuous full time service with the UAB Police Department; or a four year degree in criminal justice, or related field of study.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
A police officer serves as the primary agent for accomplishing the Department's mission and goals as they pertain to the protection of life and property, the provision of patient health care services in the hospital complex, and the provision of all other services required by the University and the Department. A police officer works for a first line supervisor in a patrol, investigative, or administrative assignment, and complies with and adheres to all Department directives, policies, and unit standard operating procedures (SOP's) in accomplishing assigned tasks.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain order, prevent crime or criminal acts, preserve the peace, enforce the law, and resolve any conflict between faculty, staff, students, patients, visitors, and guests within the University.
Create and maintain a sense of safety and security within the University.
Aid and assist all persons, as assigned, or as observed, in danger of physical harm, or who may be victims of crime, accidents, or sudden illness.
Take all necessary measured to reduce the opportunity for criminal activity and the commission of crime within the University and all its properties.
Identify criminal offenders, make apprehensions when required and necessary, and participate in subsequent court hearings.
Make preliminary investigations and submit necessary information and required reports.
Cooperate with and assist State, municipal, and other law enforcement/criminal justice agencies as required.
Report any security deficiencies, unsafe conditions, or possible fire hazards for appropriate action.
Prepare and submit all required reports accurately and completely, assuring they are professional in appearance, satisfactorily detailed, and free from grammatical, spelling, and syntax errors.
Facilitate the movement of vehicular traffic on University property, and as required, assist the City police department with traffic control and emergency assistance at the scene of an accident on the streets intersecting the University.
Courteously assist all persons seeking directions, information and assistance.
Respond punctually to all assignments and immediately to all emergencies.
Patrol assigned areas with diligence, giving special attention to, and often rechecking, those location where security problems may be the most frequent or reported.
Be accountable for securing, and properly recording, all evidence or other property, coming into the officer custody according to Department policies and directives.
Ensure all prisoners in their care and custody are safely transported and processed in accordance with Department policies and directives.
Enforce all University rules and regulations.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Must have earned a high school diploma or G.E.D., Associate degree from an accredited college or university preferred.
Preferred one year police, EMS, fire or military dispatch experience or have been employed by the UAB Police Department for at least (12) months.
Have no prior felony criminal convictions.
Must be willing work varied days and shifts.
Must be able to pass a UAB medical examination, a psychological examination, and a polygraph examination at time of hire.
Must have the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and have a working knowledge of computers and multi-line telephones.
Data processing experience and able to type 25 words per minute on a computer keyboard preferred.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Staff the Telecommunications Center and coordinate all emergency, non-emergency and routine assistance requests received by the UAB Police Department either by routing to the appropriate persons or dispatching an officer. Monitor and control all radio traffic. Monitor and dispatch all alarms coming into UAB Police Department Telecommunications Center.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Receives incoming calls for assistance and/or information for UAB employees, students, patients, and visitors.
Monitor seven different radio channels and respond as required/requested.
Receive requests for information from officers to assist in the performance of their duties.
Issues case numbers to field units from UABPD's Computer Aided Dispatch and through Birmingham Police Department as required.
Dispatch officers to assist persons in the UAB area.
Alerts the Shift Supervisor, the Shift Commander, and other senior ranking officers of all unusual occurrences.
Data entry into Computer Aided Dispatch System to record all calls received and dispatched.
Retrieves information maintained in the Alabama Criminal Justice Information System and the National Crime Information Center Systems for official police use in the performance of their duties.
Stores and controls master keys for University buildings.

-Report and replace missing, lost or broken keys
Maintains authorization lists for restricted UAB areas.
Monitors CARDKEY, Digital Receiver and wall module alarms for all buildings on UAB Campus.
Provides personnel checks as requested from authorized personnel.
Assists in maintaining all memo books in the Telecommunications Center pertinent in providing security for the UAB Community (lock and unlock schedules, patrol notes, building blueprints, R&I procedures, emergency procedures, and departmental policies).
Maintain Voice Logging Recorder.
-Clean and change tapes daily
-Store and mark tapes daily
-Report any and all unusual situations and/or needed repairs
Acts as liaison between all UAB areas and the different sections of the Police Department.
Performs other related duties as required.

Must have met all the qualifications of an Security Systems Technician Assistant at the time of promotion, if applying internally at the time of promotion.
Preferred to have at least 2(two) years of training as an Security Systems Technician Assistant; or 4(four) years locksmithing, electronics, CCTV, and alarms experience.
Must have been rated above average in all areas on the two most recent performance evaluations as a Security Systems Technician Assistant, if promoted internally.
Must be able to pass a UAB medical examination, a physical fitness examination, and a psychological examination at time of hire.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Physical Security Unit supervisor, the Physical Security Systems Technician is responsible for the overall physical security, locking devices, alarm and monitoring systems for all UAB Buildings. Designs, installs and maintains keying and security systems are requested. Actively stays abreast of current security devices and crime trends to enhance the Department's crime prevention strategy. Performs security surveys and make recommendations for approval. Stays abreast of al phases of computer technology. Keeps unit supervisor abreast of all matters within the unit.
Designs, installs, tests, and records material and human resources usage for new alarm systems, card access systems, CCTV systems, lock hardware, and compliance level of electrical codes.
Responsible for maintenance and service of all existing systems.
Installs new systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Process weekly CardKey reports for Department.
Check void access each morning and occasionally helps with CardKey photos.
Responsible for preventive maintenance on parking decks and help phones; responsible for all service calls, car unlocks according to assignment.
Responsible for maintenance and serving keying systems.
Installs new keying systems.
Responsible for maintenance and preventive maintenance on the new Intellis keying system and computer.
Designs, installs, services, recombinates lock cylinders and locking systems, cut keys, maintains equipment and tools, and repair all present and future lock and key systems.
Maintains shop area for cleanliness, and inventory stock items; locates suppliers of tools and supplies; maintains a daily log of accurate documentation of all work and materials used and keeps updated blueprints, Performs area security surveys as requested.
Responsible for condition of vehicles, as it relates to the daily inspection and driving safety.
Maintains a current working knowledge of the CardKey, Intellis, and locksmith computerized systems. Inputs, updates, files, sorts, and distributes computerized reports for customers and in-house use as necessary. Performs, from working knowledge, a general clerical front office duties during peak periods and as a cross training requirement.
Serves as a database manager and programmer for the unit. Programs the CardKey system and the Mac computer system. Maintains an archive of current and old data for future and current use. Provides proposals for existing computerized systems and keep abreast of current trends.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
An Security Systems Technician Assistant works under the supervision of the Director of the Physical Security Unit, or an experienced Security Systems Technician and repairs and installs locks for the University complex. The Physical Security Systems Technician Assistant also maintains and installs CardKey, CCTV, alarm systems. Will become eligible for the position of Security Systems Technician after successful completion of a two(2) year training period.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duplicate keys of any denomination
. Install, maintain, and repair locks.
Combinate and master key cylinders.
Keep records of work performed.
Prepare building security reports.
Maintain and install CardKey, CCTV, and alarm systems.
Assist in inventory of parts and supplies.
Restock parts and supplies.
Performs other related duties as required.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under supervision, the Physical Security Systems Assistant locks and unlocks UAB buildings on a set schedule, making temporary minor lock and/or unlock and alarm repairs and responding to priority 3 or 4 alarms as time permits.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Locks and unlocks UAB Buildings as scheduled.
Responds to lock and or alarm problems.
Responds to priority 3 and 4 alarms when officers are not available.
Assists police officers with lock and alarm problems.
Keeps daily log of duties performed.
Write up service requests on problems found.
Maintain cleanliness of work area and vehicles.
Conduct building security checks.
Report potential security and safety violations.
Subject to working past normal times due to emergency situations.
Subject to guarding unsecurable areas until police officers, building owners or physical security technicians arrive.
