Policy 105 - Recruitment

Date Issued: 10/80
Date Revised: 08/09

Job openings, not specifying UAB-specific skills or experience, are required to be posted on the external gateway of the UAB Employment Office web page for a minimum of three calendar days.

Job openings requiring UAB-specific skills or experience are first posted on the internal gateway of the UAB Employment Office web page for a minimum of three calendar days. If there is an insufficient pool of qualified applicants after the three days, the job will also be posted on the external gateway.

Job openings to be recruited internally (filled with an employee working within the department where the vacancy exists) are required to be posted on the internal gateway of the UAB Employment Office web page for a minimum of three calendar days.

All recruitment advertising should be coordinated through either the University or Hospital Employment Office. The Employment Offices can suggest effective advertisements and advise on Affirmative Action requirements that must appear in all recruitment advertising.

Openings for which there are insufficient numbers of qualified applicants may be advertised in the local newspapers. If the job market area is regional or national, the advertising may be done on a regional or national basis. Professional and research positions may be advertised in the appropriate journals.

Recruitment for medical, professional and research positions is frequently carried to colleges and universities in the Southeast. Local business and technical schools and professional or technical organizations may be sources of applicants. Job openings are also listed with the State Employment Service.

Commercial employment agencies generally are not used unless all other resources have been exhausted. If a department wishes to use a commercial employment agency, the contact should be coordinated through either University or Hospital Employment.

POLICY 105.A Applying for Employment

Individuals may apply for positions at UAB from any computer with internet access. To apply, go to
www.uab.edu (job openings) and instructions are provided for completing an application. To apply for UAB Hospital positions one may also go to www.uabhealthcareers.org.

Individuals may also visit the University or Hospital Employment Office to review job openings and apply online using office computers provided for this purpose. Staff is available to provide assistance if needed. Completed applications are electronically sent to the appropriate recruiter for review. It is the responsibility of the applicant to apply for specific position vacancies of interest. Due to the large volume of applications recruiters are unable to personally contact or meet with each applicant who applies at UAB. Therefore, all questions of a general nature may be directed to a University or Hospital Employment Office staff member.
