Policy 128 – Employment and Consulting Outside of UAB

Employees are permitted employment outside of UAB if it does not interfere with their University job responsibilities. For full-time regular employees, (including 3/12 hour shift employees) their UAB job is expected to be their primary employment. External employment is allowed under the following conditions:

  1. It does not interfere with an employee's function and performance of University responsibilities,
  2. It is limited in duration,
  3. It is compatible with the interests of UAB as a public academic institution, and
  4. It does not require use of University resources or facilities.

Outside employment should not bring discredit to the University, nor should an employee use their association with the University to acquire the position. Before accepting employment outside of UAB, employees should discuss the matter with their supervisors, making sure that no conflict of interest exists. The University management necessarily reserves the right to reschedule work assignments to meet the demands of University employment.

External consulting should be performed on the employee's own time and with the consent of the appropriate manager. If external consulting is conducted during an employee's regular UAB work schedule, the time away from the job must be charged either to vacation or personal holiday or be taken without pay.
