Policy 413 - Reinstatement of Service Date

Date Issued: 08/83
Date Revised: 07/12
413.A Voluntary Termination

Full-time regular or part-time regular faculty and staff employees who voluntarily terminate employment with UAB and are reinstated within 60 calendar days following separation may have their original service date reinstated and will accrue benefits based on the number of years of employment at the time of termination. Unused accrued sick leave will be reinstated, and unused personal holidays will be reinstated unless a new accrual period has begun. Vacation time paid at the time of termination will not be reinstated.

Employees who voluntarily terminate employment and are hired into a new position will serve a ninety (90) calendar day probationary period, which does not affect access to benefit eligibility.

413.B Loss of Funding/Displacement

Full-time or part-time regular faculty and staff employees terminated due to economic conditions, loss of funding, or departmental reorganization may have their original service date reinstated if they are rehired at UAB within 180 days from date of termination.  Accrued sick leave and unused personal holidays will be reinstated in accordance with the policy for voluntary termination.
Displaced staff employees hired into a new position will serve a ninety (90) calendar day probationary period, which does not affect access to benefit eligibility.

413.C Other

Other exceptional situations will be reviewed on an individual basis and a determination will be made by the Chief Human Resources Officer for UAB as to the appropriateness of service date reinstatement.
