Postdoctoral Position in Biomedical Optics Instrument and Retinal Imaging within the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
Our research lab is focused on optical technology for advanced imaging of retinal morphology and physiology. We have developed both time-domain and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems to investigage anatomic correlates of retinal OCT. In-depth understanding of anatomic sources of the OCT signal is essential for accurage interpretation of clinical outcomes, and is valuable for instrument optimization to enable reliable assessment of AMD and other eye disdiseases. We are currently working on functional OCT, confocal and super-resolution microscopy of intrinsic optical signal (IOS) dynamics correlated with retinal physiological kinetics. Our recent experiments revealed transient phototropic change in retinal rod photoreceptors. We anticipate that further investigation of the rod-dominant phototropic response can provide a high-resolution IOS biomarker to allow objective identification of rod dysfunction, thereby allowing early detection and easy treatment evaluation of eye diseases, such as AMD-associated photoreceptor degeneration.
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Enhgineering, Applied Physics or a related discipline. Experience with optical instrument construction and maintenance is essential. Proficiency in Labview and Matlab programming is expected. Experience with animal handling is desirable but not necessary. The selected candidate witll have excellent opportunities to interact with researchers in Engineering, Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences for multidisciplinary Training.
