UAB celebrates another prestigious international student honor as Ophelia Johnson earns a 2016 Marshall Scholarship, one of only 40 awarded nationally. Our congratulations to Ophelia, a recent graduate of our biomedical engineering program and now a master's student in Engineering, on this well-deserved recognition of her outstanding accomplishments.
This scholarship is among a record number of national and international scholarships and fellowships (77) earned by our students over the past two years, including our third Rhodes Scholar (the most of any university in the state since 2000). Our students' ongoing success in earning these awards speaks to the caliber of students we are recruiting and our continued investment in novel academic programs and research opportunities. Ophelia graduated from the only undergraduate biomedical engineering program in the state and the degree she is currently pursuing--a Master of Engineering in Design and Commercialization--is an innovative collaboration between Engineering and the Collat School of Business that is training our engineering students to also be successful entrepreneurs. My thanks to our faculty, administrators and staff who continue developing and conducting such leading-edge programs and recruiting such talented students.
I also want to thank and commend Ashley Floyd Kuntz and her team in the National and International Fellowships Office of the Honors College for the exceptional work they continue to do. A Marshall Scholarship and Rhodes Scholarship earned by our students in the space of year is a tremendous achievement. Such high-profile international honors also underscore our focus on global citizenship as integral aspect of the UAB undergraduate experience, as we educate future leaders of our local and global community.
Again, our congratulations to Ophelia as well as the dedicated mentors who have instructed and inspired her.
