Groundbreaking for the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts
(November 18, 2011). President Garrison describes how this state-of-the-art facicility will be the beginjning of a legacy of pioneering and engaging acheivements in the visuals arts, arts education and scholarship.



2011 State of the University Address: A Decade of Daring (October 20, 2011)
, left. President Garrison reflects on some of the university's major accomplishments of the past decade, looks aheads to exciting developments on the horizon, and pays tribute to the campus-wide sense of daring across all disciplines that continues to earn UAB international renown.

American Cancer Society Congressional Briefing (August 25, 2011). President Garrison joins Dr. Ed Partridge, Director of UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and President of the American Cancer Society, and other UAB faculty to convey to Alabama’s congressional delegation the critical need for continued federal funding for cancer research.

Remarks at UAB Honors Convocation (May 6, 2011). President Garrison speaks at this annual convocation celebrating the accomplishments of UAB students who have won prestigious awards and honors.

Remarks at Disaster Relief Public Meeting (May 2, 2011). In the wake of the devestaing tornadoes of April 27, President Garrison speaks at an on-campus meeting attended by Congresswoman Terri Sewell and other elected officials, disaster relief agencies (FEMA, Alabama EMA), nonprofit and faith-based groups, as well as affected individuals and businesses, to discuss the disaster relief process.

Remarks at UAB School of Nursing Doctoral Hooding Ceremony (May 2, 2011). President Garrison addresses graduates, families and faculty mentors of UAB's Doctor of Nursing Practice Program.  

Remarks to BACHE (Birmingham Area Consortium of Higher Education) Women's Conference (March 30, 2011). At this annual conference hosted this year by UAB, President Garrison highlights women's gains in the workplace over several decades and the accompanying need for a healthy "work-life balance," the conference's theme.


Presentation to Leadership Alabama, "Driving Alabama's Economy through Education and R&D," Huntsville, AL (March 25, 2011), left. President Garrison highlights the role of reserach universities such as UAB in driving the state and national economies. She is joined in her presentation by Jack Secrist, CEO of UAB's longtime partner, Southern Research Institute. 

Remarks at Medical Alumni Association Alumni Weekend
(February 19, 2011). President Garrison joins School of Medicine faculty and students, civic leaders and elected officals including Gov. Robert Bentley, in welcoming back medical alumni from around the nation and the world, and to celebrate the School's ongoing role in ensuring improved heath and quality of life, as well as a healthier economy.

Remarks at Ullman High School Reunion (November 20, 2010).  At a reunion of alumni and former teachers of historic Ullman High School (whose original structure is among the oldest buildings on campus), President Garrison describes how Ullman's legacy of inspired teaching and mentoring lives on at UAB.




2010 State of the University Address
(October 21, 2010), above. President Garrison shares a draft of UAB's new Strategic Plan with refined goals and objectives, and encourages faculty, staff and students to provide feedback on the future of UAB and Birmingham.

(October 18, 2010). In acceptance remarks on behalf of herself and two other 2010 Academy inductees, President Garrison lauds the creative and entrepreneurial spirit that inspires Alabama to excellence—past, present and future.

2009 State of the University Address (October 22, 2009).President Garrison highlights the accomplishments and challenges of the past year, UAB's 40th anniversary, and 40 reasons to believe that the university's future will be even more successful and innovative than its past.

 

"UAB and Birmingham: Partnering to Combat Poverty" (May 11, 2009). Presentation to "The Impact of Poverty on Our Community" Conference. At a day-long conference held at UAB's Hill University Center, featuring a keynote address by Congressman Artur Davis, President Garrison discusses how UAB continues partnering with Birmingham to improve quality of life through better education, research and healthcare, and economic development.

 

2009 Board of Trustees Institutional Presentation (February 6, 2009). President Garrison highlights the profound impact that UAB research has at home and around the globe. Featured speakers are Gary Warner, director of research in Computer Forensics; David Standaert, director of UAB’s Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics; Melanie Shores, principal investigator of the GEMS program; and Salpy Pamboukian, medical director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support Device program.

 

Partnering for a Stronger Economy: UAB, Our Region and Our State. Presentation to Regional Elected Officials (January 26, 2009). President Garrison illustrates UAB's role as the economic engine of the Birmingham area and Alabama, and how state budget decisions in these challenging times need to be prudent and equitable.
