The last 15 years have seen a wholesale transformation of the application of mass spectrometry (MS) due to the introduction of soft ionization techniques (electrospray ionization, ESI; matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization, MALDI). These have allowed fragile biological molecules to be introduced into the gas phase and to be analyzed by MS. These range from complex lipids to peptides and intact proteins. Improvements in 2D-protein separation methods have also occurred. Accordingly, MS has become an analytical technique that is vital to the research of both basic science and clinically-based investigators. UAB's investment in a single lab began in 1992. Now there are several MS groups with different types of specialization, ranging from clinical proteomics, 2D-proteomics, quantitative small molecule and peptide analysis, and high resolution mass spectrometry. Individual investigators have also developed novel MS applications. Many UAB Centers are associated with the MS/proteomics labs. Training in proteomics and MS is available from workshops and graduate classes.
