Retirement of the Sciex API-3
On October 22, 2007, the Sciex API-3 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer in the Mass Spectrometry Shared Facility was retired after 14 years of stellar service. This instrument was the first to be installed in the Shared Facility in 1993. Shown in the picture with Dr. Stephen Barnes (center), the Shared Facility Director, are Marion Kirk (far left), the original operator, and Landon Wilson (far right) and Ray Moore (right rear) who also operated it in the period from 2000-2007. It is being replaced by an ABI-Sciex 3200 triple quadrupole instrument which will be available for use by Thanksgiving, 2007. Dr. Barnes noted that it remains a very well built instrument. It survived a flood in 2004 almost without any damage. Current plans are for it to be used as a teaching device for high school students to introduce them to the importance of mass spectrometry.
