Kathryn “Kathy” Mergl serves as Manager of Quality Assurance and Online Program Development in the division of eLearning and Professional Studies. She is responsible for institution-wide online education quality assurance, including coordination of SACS accreditation for online programs. She utilizes best practices to improve the delivery and performance of UAB online offerings. In addition, Ms. Mergl is responsible for development and management of new online, professional studies (CE) programs, assisting with converting traditional academic courses to online formats, working to centralize technology needs to support online teaching and learning, and publicizing online education best practices among faculty and staff. She also serves as an institutional representative for the Quality Matters program at UAB.
Kathy holds a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Bachelor of Science from Pennsylvania State University. She also holds several OSHA certifications.
Kathy came to UAB in 2012 as the Program Manager for the totally online Master of Engineering in Advanced Safety Engineering and Management program.
Kathy’s background is in quality assurance and engineering, where she has worked for over twenty years. She has extensive experience in project management, with expertise in continuous improvement process, strategizing and managing quality assurance through assessments, best practices and training coordination. As an engineer, Kathy has taken grass roots design projects from concept to construction.
Kathy is an active member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, and the Sloan Consortium. She is the founding president of the Safety Blazers chapter of the UAB National Alumni Society.
Kathy is also active in the greater Birmingham, Alabama community. She chaired the development of the Chelsea Nature Walk project, encourages citywide recycling and volunteers at local botanical gardens.
