Pediatric Chronic Pain:  A Biopsychosocial Approach
Thomas Vetter, M.D., M.P.H.
Department of Anesthesiology
Division of Pain Medicine

Pediatric chronic pain is very complex and ideally involves a biopsychosocial approach.  To treat pain without treating emotions or to treat emotions without treating pain is usually futile, dooming the patient to chronic suffering and the clinician to chronic frustration

Objectives
1. To review the nature of and a current conceptual framework of pediatric chronic pain
2. To discuss a multimodal, biopsychosocial approach to pediatric chronic pain treatment
3  To highlight the use of patient-reported outcomes measures, including health-related quality of life and adverse family impact, in the treatment of pediatric chronic pain
