Pre-Clinical Research

In order to advance our understanding and treatment potential for the field of oncology, a three faceted approach has been undertaken in the Department of Radiation Oncology at UAB. Basic science, or "bench research", examines the fundamental aspects of biological response to radiation. Clinical science, or "the bedside", utilizes therapeutic interventions to help prevent, cure, and palliate cancer in patients. Basic science discoveries can provide leads for future therapies while clinical observations can generate new questions for basic scientific inquiry.

The Pre-Clinical Research Program at UAB was implemented to bridge the gap between the basic and clinical sciences. This endeavor seeks to discover new targets for modifying radiation treatment response in cancer. After new targets are identified, novel therapeutics aimed at these targets will be developed in pre-clinical models of cancer. Our research findings will not only provide the foundation for future clinical trials but also stimulate further basic science investigations.
