july 19 soo insideVision screenings have long been a part of the School of Optometry’s community service offerings. In 1974, two optometry students screened two young children for vision issues.

The school’s tradition of community engagement continues to this day: Janene Sims, O.D., Ph.D., associate professor or optometry and supervisor of the family practice residency in the School of Optometry, is the winner of the 2020 Odessa Woolfolk Community Service Award for her work to influence change in the greater Birmingham community.

Sims consistently encourages students to become involved in the community, whether through providing vision screenings and eye exams in senior centers, elementary schools, Black Belt communities and more or teaching cow eye dissections at Ramsey High School.
