From July 7-17, nearly 20 units from across the enterprise will host tailored, hands-on activities for visitors to the new World Games Plaza, located at Birmingham’s new City Walk BHAM near Protective Stadium and the Uptown district. The school’s tradition of community engagement continues to this day as remain involved in the community, whether through providing vision screenings and eye exams in senior centers, elementary schools, Black Belt communities and more or teaching cow eye dissections at Ramsey High School.

Janene Sims, associate professor of optometry, is the winner of the 2021 Odessa Woolfolk Community Service Award for her work to influence change in the greater Birmingham community.

This year, the university recognizes 50 years of service by Jeanne Hutchison, Ph.D., and Ferdinand Urthaler, M.D., and 45 years of service by Robert Kim M.D., and Joseph Lovetto. In addition, 294 employees with 20 or more years and 904 with five, 10 and 15 years will honored for their longevity.

UAB BTS logo FINALFor the fifth year, the UAB School of Optometry provided free comprehensive eye exams and glasses to nearly 200 Birmingham residents.

Special contact lenses or eye drops can reduce a patient’s final prescription by half in the School of Optometry’s Myopia Control Clinic. That means thinner lenses and also a much lower risk of serious eye problems, including glaucoma and cataracts.

UAB optometrists and ophthalmologists worked with lead medical personnel from UAB Athletics to modify AHSAA restrictions that prohibited tinted visors or other apparatuses in competition to get accommodations for high school athletes who had light sensitivity and similar health conditions.
