Get your groove on with free Latin dance classes

Latin dance class streamDance partners or previous dance knowledge are not needed to participate and enjoy each class.Learn various types of Latin dances and the cultural, social and historical context behind the moves during three free classes Sept. 27, Oct. 4 and Oct. 11 in the Alys Stephens Center Engel Plaza.

"Dancing is my absolute favorite way to release stress and sneak in some exercise,” said Anna Threadcraft, director of UAB Employee Wellness. “I can't think of a better way for our employees to improve heart health and have some fun over the next few weeks than by joining one of the upcoming Latin dance classes."

Mark your calendars for an upcoming free class:

  • Afro-Cuban Social Dance
    5:30 p.m. Sept. 27
    Cuban dance master Sergio Rodriguez will introduce participants to traditional Afro-Cuban social dance forms and cultural context.

  • Danza Azteca and Baile Folklórico dé Mexico
    5:30 p.m. Oct. 4
    Norma Flores of Birmingham’s Ballet Folklórico Corazón Azteca, will cover traditional Aztec dance and folkloric dance of Mexico and the spiritual and historical elements within the dance forms.

  • Tango
    5:30 p.m. Oct. 11
    Dancing Doctors Sara Alvarez and Roswell Pfister will teach the basic steps and cultural context of Argentine tango.

“I’m thrilled that the center is able to bring the community together to share these arts and cultural experiences," said Anna M. Thompson, executive director of the Alys Stephens Center. "The courtyard is a perfect place for outdoor dance classes and concerts. Serving all of Birmingham, we want people to bring their friends and family and enjoy the cultural exploration.”
