More than 2,200 UAB employees participated in the free onsite biometric screenings this year, and 1,900 of them earned a combined $229,350 in rewards for test results that were in the healthy range or were improved since 2016.

The Wellscreens — available to all benefit-eligible employees of the university, UAHSF, UAB Health System and UAB Hospital — measure glucose, total cholesterol, HDL, blood pressure, height, weight and BMI, among other indicators. All participants receive a health-risk profile based on the results and up to $150 to offset the cost of insurance premiums.
UAB Employee Wellness Director Anna Threadcraft is thrilled with the results.
“Every penny awarded for healthy metrics is an investment in our UAB community, and it makes a statement that UAB truly cares about their employees as a whole person,” Threadcraft said. “Already we’ve heard some amazing stories about employees who never knew they had high blood pressure or blood sugar until their Wellscreen visit.”
This is the second year UAB has paid the incentive to employees. In 2016, 800 employees qualified for the reward. The screenings were launched as part of UAB’s My Health Rewards program in 2015, which also provides employees year-round opportunities to earn points for exercise and activities and be entered into quarterly sweepstakes for cash prizes.
Second chance for screening
Eligible new hires and employees who missed the screenings held Feb. 21-April 14 can get the free screening June 7- Aug. 16 in the HEALTHSMART Clinic at 1717 11th Ave. South. Participants can receive free testing and a health-risk profile based on the results, but monetary incentives are not awarded for employees screened during the extended dates. Schedule your WELLSCREEN visit online using your BlazerID and login.
Employees can access their WELLSCREENS results online through the My Health Rewards portal at uab.edu/myhealthrewards.

Employee Wellness is offering a series of targeted health classes through July 20 that focus on heart health, diabetes and weight-management for employees looking to improve their numbers and their health before next year’s WELLSCREEN visit.
“We know wellness matters, and we want to make it as easy as possible for employees to take intentional steps to live their healthiest,” said Threadcraft.
