  • Leona C. Fitzmaurice, PhD
    Assistant Vice President, Business Development

    Dr. Leona Fitzmaurice became Director of Technology Transfer for The UAB Research Foundation at the University of Alabama in Birmingham in October 2004.  She previously was Executive Director of the Washington State University Research Foundation after being Associate Director for Life Sciences in the University of Florida’s Office of Technology Licensing.  She has facilitated the formation of more than 20 university start-up companies.  In 1993 she founded her own company, a spin-out from SIBIA, Inc., the Salk Institute’s biotechnology company.  Dr. Fitzmaurice co-founded SIBIA’s Plant Sciences Program in 1985, acquired financial support from Hunt-Wesson Foods, Sumitomo Chemical, and Asahi Industries Ltd., and developed and managed the program for nearly ten years, creating and patenting new technologies.  Earlier, she was a Research Expert at the NIH.  NATO Postdoctoral and NIH Postdoctoral fellowships supported her for four years of research in the United Kingdom at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, and at the University of Glasgow respectively.  She holds a BA in Biology from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Southern California.
