Daniel Ross, Program Director at YouthServe, will provide a training on cultural
preparedness when working in communities through addressing the benefits of
volunteering, understanding diversity in communities, and how to promote change in your
community.

What Makes a “Good” Community Partner
Shannon Ammons, CEO of the Alabama Association of Non-Profits (AAN), will discuss what attributes make a non-profit an ideal community partner for a service learning course. She will also discuss the mission of the AAN as well as the trainings and services they provide.

The 2014-2015 UAB Community Outreach & Engagement Fellows (AmeriCorps VISTAs) will discuss the top 9 components and considerations for a successful service learning course.  This discussion is ideal for faculty who are interested in incorporating service learning into their classes as well as existing service learning faculty interested in gaining a new perspective.

Fall Service Learning Expo


Service Learning ExpoStudents in fall service-learning courses will showcase their summer and fall projects in this new exposition of UAB student and community engagement collaborations. The Office of Service Learning and the School of Nursing are sponsoring a Fall Service Learning Expo on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 from 10:00 a.m.-12 p.m. at the UAB Campus Recreation Center. The purpose of this event is to not only give students presentation experience but also to showcase and celebrate the community partners and projects in summer and fall service learning courses at UAB.

Similar to the Spring and Summer Student Expos, students will present projects via poster presentations either as individuals or in groups. Students will make brief presentations about their work to judges from UAB and the community, and prizes will be awarded to the top three projects and to the project deemed the most innovative.

Parking is available in the 9th Avenue Parking Deck (1602 9th Avenue South) on 16th Street between University Avenue and 9th Avenue. Bring your ticket with you, and it can be stamped at the event.

Student Participants

Student registration has now closed. Students may set up their posters from 9:15-9:50 a.m. on Dec. 3rd in the Center Court of the UAB Campus Rec Center. Judging will start promptly at 10 a.m. Students are to stand by their posters to explain their projects to judges until the judging period ends at 11:15 a.m. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three projects and to the project deemed the most innovative.
