Dean Gives Sneak Peak Inside SHPBIn early June, Dean Jones gave our camera a guided tour through the 5th and 6th floor additions to the School of Health Professions Building (SHPB). The timeframe for everyone to move in is late August and everything appears to be on schedule. Knock on wood.
Crane comes down - 50% completedAfter nearly 10 months, the crane used during the addition to the School of Health Professions Building was slowly taken down. Crews began taking apart the crane early in the morning and it took most of the day. That means the project is 50 percent completed. A few side bricks and several windows are what is left on the outside to finish. The real work soon begins on the inside. Here's a video of one of the parts coming down.
For many of you, it's been a while since you stepped back into your old haunt, the Webb Building. If it has, then you know the building has aged, but not quite as gracefully. Classrooms have remained the same small, tight quarters. It's not very impressive and reflective of a program that is ranked fifth in the nation.
Inside peek of construction
Most of what you can see of the construction to the School of Health Professions Building has been the outside going up. Here's a sneak peek of what it looks like from the inside. For those of you who have been in the SHP Building, you know there is only one elevator. The good news is that crews are in the process of installing a second one as you can see the shaft to the right here.
Exterior walls going up
Construction crews began adding some of the exterior walls to the top of the School of Health Professions building last week. With an opening date of late summer 2013, the building is 30 percent complete.
Crews are now beginning to work on the stair shafts. Building of the mechanical room walls and elevator machine room is now in progress. Fireproofing on the 6th floor is 90 percent complete and fireproofing began on the 5th floor this week.
Topping out ceremonyThe final top beam to the two-floor addition to the School of Health Professions Building was put in place today in a “topping out” ceremony on Monday, May 7, 2012. SHP faculty, staff and students signed the beam along with employees of the contractor, Harbert International, LLC last week. The group watched as crews hoisted the beam to the top with a UAB flag attached.
Construction on the $13 million project began in January 2012. It is expected to be finished by summer 2013 in time for the fall semester.
