| Dr. Pijuan-Thompson is the program director for the MS in Clinical Laboratory Sciences Cytology Track. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Barry University (1980) and obtained training in cytotechnology from the University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Florida (1981). She began her career as a Cytotechnologist for Quality Laboratory Assoc., Inc., in Hollywood, FL and held Cytotechnologist positions at National Health Laboratories, Inc. and SmithKline Bioscience, both in Florida. Dr. Pijuan-Thompson received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Miami in Florida (1991). She then completed her Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Dept. of Pharmacology and the Dept. of Pathology, both at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has served as faculty for the cytotechnology program since 1997 and has held the position of program director since 2005.
Dr. Pijuan-Thompson also serves as an Associate Scientist at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UAB Minority Health Research Center. She is an active member of the American Society of Cytopathology, American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Society for Cytotechnology and the Cytology Association of Alabama. She has served as Region 4 director for the American Society for Cytotechnology since February 2008. Dr. Pijuan-Thompson is an avid supporter of expanding the cytotechnologists’ scope of practice to integrate molecular diagnostics and new technologies, and has developed courses in Molecular Diagnostics for the cytotechnology program students and online continuing education modules for cytotechnology professionals.
